St. Paul, MN : College student killed in crash with semi near Rochester on Thursday, 17th March 2018

An Altura, Minn., college student was killed Thursday when she ran a stop sign south of Rochester and was hit by a semitrailer.

Amelia Joanne Speltz, 20, was driving her 2005 Toyota Avalon south on Olmsted County Road 8 about 11:30 a.m. when she rolled through the intersection at Minnesota 30.

Marlon Davis, 50, of St. James, was driving his semi east on Highway 30, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. He was not injured.

The road condition was dry and Speltz’s airbag did deploy, the report said, but she was not wearing a seat belt.

According to her obituary with Hoff Funeral Home, Speltz had returned from a mission trip to Egypt the day before the collision.

She graduated from Lewiston-Altura High School in 2015 and was currently attending Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, N.D.

“She loved children and worked at Cardinal Club in Lewiston, Friendship Place in Rochester, was a nanny for several families in Rochester and volunteered for many years at youth camps at Ironwood Christian Springs Ranch in Stewartville,” according to her obituary.
