Manchester, N.H : One person died after Car, SUV collide near Union Street and Lake Avenue early Sunday morning, Nov 29, 2015

Manchester police are investigating a serious crash early Sunday morning near Union Street and Lake Avenue that killed one person.

Police said a Honda Pilot, driven by a Manchester man, and a Volkswagen Tiguan collided around 4:20 a.m.

Police are accusing the driver of the Volkswagen, Alexander Burke, 31, of Bow, of drinking and driving.

Witness Larry Powell said he was walking by with his friend when the crash happened.

"I was coming down the alley way and my buddy said you gotta help me," Powell said.

But he said emergency crews soon rushed to the scene.

"They had the Jaws of Life and they had to pry the doors open. I knew right then, they were going to be hurting," Powell said.

A passenger inside the Honda was killed. Four others from the Honda were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

District Fire Chief Al Poulin said that this is one of the worst accidents he has ever seen.

"In my 33 years on the fire department, this is one of the more severe accidents I have encountered. The victims in the first vehicle all severe and critical, all taken to the Elliot Hospital. The Jaws of Life was the extrication tool used to get two of the victims out," Poulin said.

Police arrested Burke and charged him with felony driving while intoxicated.
