A city police cruiser was struck by an out-of-control vehicle Monday morning before dawn on I-75 at the River Raisin while two officers investigated an earlier crash there.

According to the report, the officers had positioned their cruiser to provide safety protection while they investigated the initial two-vehicle crash, which was reported at 6:49 a.m., on the freeway’s southbound side.

Shortly after the officers’ arrival, a vehicle approaching the crash scene went out of control and spun, hitting a side wall on the bridge before its rear end hit the cruiser’s rear end.

No one was injured in either collision, although Officer Peyton Smithers, who was in the cruiser when it was hit, was taken to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital afterward for a medical evaluation.
