A 61-year-old Stratford man was killed in a three-vehicle accident on southbound Route 8 in Trumbull Saturday morning.

State Police identified the victim as Clifford Voight, of James Farm Road in Stratford.
According to an accident report, Voight was traveling behind two other vehicles in the left lane around 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

The first vehicle, driven by Jonathan Hernandez, 29, of Wallingford, then “dramatically reduced its speed within the left lane.”

The vehicle behind Hernandez’s Suzuki SUV - a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Derek Michaels, 32, of Vernon - then slowed down.

“As both vehicles slowed and/or stopped in the left lane,” Voight‘s 1999 Maxima then “forcibly struck” the Grand Cherokee, pushing it into the Suzuki SUV.
Due to the severe injury, Voight was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Hernandez was also taken to St. Vincent’s where he was treated and released for minor injuries. Michaels reported no injuries.

Police said the case will remain active pending further investigation.
The fatal accident shut down two lanes of Route 8 south in Trumbull on Saturday causing huge traffic delays for hours.

State police say the three-vehicle crash happened at 9:25 a.m. on southbound Route 8 near Exit 7, the White Plains Road exit, just before Route 8’s merge with Route 25.

More than three hours after the crash, two southbound lanes remained blocked with southbound traffic crawling through the area. Only the shoulder was passable. All lanes reopened around 1 p.m.
Speeds were knocked down into the single numbers with southbound traffic backed up about a mile to the Shelton city line.

Trumbull fire department crews and first responders also responded to the crash scene.
