Fremont County, CO : Colorado State Patrol investigating teen's death on CR 67 (Phantom Canyon Road) in Fremont County on Monday, 23rd July 2018

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash on CR 67 (Phantom Canyon Road) in Fremont County, which may have resulted in one fatality.

The crash occurred sometime Monday night and was discovered Tuesday morning by passers-by.

According to the CSP, a 2001 Dodge Ram was traveling southbound on Phantom Canyon Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve to his left. The Dodge rotated counter-clockwise, traveled off the western road edge and traveled backward down a steep embankment. The vehicle continued backward before it overturned end-over-end and became wedged between two boulders, upside down, approximately eight feet off the ground.

At some point, the driver was separated from the vehicle and was found in a creek bed 180 feet southwest of the vehicle.

It is unknown if the driver, identified as 19-year-old Jake Howlett, was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
