Fort Lauderdale,FL : Weston man dies in wrong-way turnpike crash on March, Sunday 18th 2018

Investigators don’t yet know why a Weston man’s car crossed over a grassy median of Florida’s Turnpike before being hit by a tractor-trailer in a crash that killed him.

The crash happened shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday near the exit to Coconut Creek Parkway.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, James Mellides, 28, was driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla north when, for unknown reasons, the car veered left crossed over the grass median and went into the southbound lanes of the turnpike, investigators said.

The Toyota was “t-boned” by a southbound International ProStar tractor-trailer in the center lane that was being driven by a man from Lavinia, Tennessee, according to FHP.

Both men were taken to Broward General Medical Center. The truck driver had only minor injuries, but Mellides died, FHP said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
