October 26th 2016
Two area men were killed in an automobile crash just after midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Burns Township, Shiawassee County. Michigan State Police responded to the crash at 12:04 a.m.
Michael Foster, 26, of Byron and Christopher Hopkins, 26, of Coleman were killed when the 1996 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck they were traveling in struck the passenger side of a 1996 GMC Sierra pickup truck, driven by a 48-year-old man from Allen Park.
The crash occurred at the intersection of S. Byron and E. Miller roads.
According to Spl/F/Lt David Kaiser, public information officer for the Michigan State Police, Foster was driving eastbound on E. Miller Road. Hopkins was in the backseat.
The investigation revealed that Foster failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection of S. Byron Road. His Chevy truck struck the passenger side of the GMC truck traveling southbound, which had the right-of-way. The driver of the GMC was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected in the crash. He was injured, but will be OK, according to Kaiser.
Another passenger in Foster’s truck, a 20-year-old woman from Swartz Creek, was in the right front passenger seat. She was transported to an area hospital and is listed in critical condition with multiple injuries.
Kaiser said the speed limit in this area is 55 miles per hour. The weather was clear at the time of the crash, but it is a dark intersection. The air bags deployed in Foster’s truck.
