STARKS, LA : Alexandria man killed in Calcasieu Parish crash on Friday, January, 12th 2018

A man from Alexandria died this morning after crashing into a tree in Calcasieu Parish.

On January 12, 2018, shortly before 5:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 12 about 6 miles from the Texas state line near the community of Starks.

The initial investigation revealed a 2002 Nissan Sentra driven by 54-year-old Charles Bradley Roberts of Alexandria was traveling west on LA 12 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle traveled off the highway in a slight curve and struck a tree broadside.

Roberts, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office. No one else was in the vehicle.

A toxicology sample was obtained from Roberts and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.

Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway. Speeding also extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and can lead to a more serious collision in cases where the vehicle strikes another object. Troopers encourage motorists to observe the speed limit and to drive at a speed that is safe for prevailing road and weather conditions.

While every crash is not survivable, wearing a seat belt is the simplest and most effective step motorists can take to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a crash. Louisiana state law requires motor vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night.

This is the second fatal crash investigated by Troop D this year. Excessive speed is strongly suspected of being the primary factor in both of these crashes.
