Anderson County, S.C : Man charged with DUI in crash that injured HS basketball standout on Monday, March 9, 2015
A man has been charged with DUI after a crash that injured a standout high school basketball player, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers.
Ted Arrowood is also charged with open container of beer/wine, transporting alcohol in motor vehicle with seal broken and a seat belt violation, according to the Anderson County Detention Center website.
Charles Smith said his daughter, Breyona Williams, was badly injured in the crash Monday night and was undergoing surgery on Tuesday.
Williams is a senior at Pendleton High School.
Team officials with the Pendleton High School girls basketball team said the crash happened after District Four recognized the team at a board meeting.
They said that after celebrating at Dairy Queen, Breyona's vehicle was hit by an oncoming white pickup truck that crossed the center line on Highway 76 near Summers Lane.
The truck slammed into the driver's side of Breyona's car. Dispatchers said she was trapped in the car and had to be airlifted to Greenville Memorial.
Breyona was listed in serious condition when she was admitted Monday night. Her father said that she suffered multiple injuries, most to her left side, including broken bones and severe lacerations, one that nearly tore her ear off.
He said when Breyona was conscious, she asked him what she had done wrong and why she was in the hospital.
Smith thanked supporters for their prayers and condolences.
Breyona is a starting guard for the Pendleton High basketball team.
On Monday, Breyona was named to the North-South all-star basketball team. The games will be played March 21 at Lexington High School.
On the National Collegiate Scouting Association website, her posting says, “My name is Breyona Williams, and I am currently a junior at Pendleton High School. I have been participating in Pendleton Varsity Athletics for 5 years. I have been in the starting lineup for 3 years.
"The past two years I have been selected All-Region 2A. I would like to attend a four-year college and I plan to enter the medical field. I would also like to continue my basketball career into college. I love basketball, but at the same time I believe that keeping your grades up is more important. Going to college and playing basketball is something I have always dreamed to do, and I hope to accomplish that dream.”
