Hazleton, PA : Downtown crash sends moped driver airborne on Monday, 17th October 2016

A man was flown to a hospital after a car and moped collided at North Church and West Broad streets in Hazleton on Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:20 p.m.

A witness told the Standard-Speaker he was traveling west on Broad Street (Route 93) and stopped at a red light when the crash happened. While he didn’t see the actual collision, he did see the moped operator — who wasn’t wearing a helmet — fly through the air.

Hazleton police said the male operating the bike sustained “significant injuries.”

They are still investigating the circumstances of the crash and ask anyone with information to call them at 570-459-4940 or 911.

Hazleton Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Jones said the moped operator appeared to have sustained a broken left leg, and head and arm injuries. The victim was conscious but confused when first responders were tending to him, Jones said, and he was flown to an unknown hospital for treatment.

The moped operator’s shoes were found lying near the bike at Broad and Church streets.

People inside Broad Street Deli heard a loud bang as the car and moped collided right outside the business.

Traffic was blocked on Broad Street from Church Street east to Laurel Street.

Personnel from American Patient Transport Systems Inc., Hazleton fire, city police and fire police were on scene.
