woman sustained possibly life-threatening injuries Wednesday morning in a head-on crash in Lothian.
Just after 7 a.m., county police and fire units were dispatched to the crash near the Lothian Sunoco in the 5500 block of Southern Maryland Boulevard and discovered a collision involving a 2013 Ford flatbed tow truck and Mercury Grand Marquis.
Police said 47-year-old Patricia Hughan of Churchton was driving the Grand Marquis westbound on Southern Maryland Boulevard when it exited onto a service road and was struck by the tow truck, driven by 47-year-old Kirk Kidwell of Lothian. Witnesses told police Hughan did not stop for the stop sign at the end of the ramp.
Hughan was trapped for approximately 10 minutes before she was extricated, said fire department spokesman Capt. Russ Davies. She sustained critical, possibly life-threatening injuries and was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Davies said.
The preliminary cause of the crash appears to failure to stop at a stop sign, police said. There were no signs of excessive speed or alcohol use.
