CAMANO ISLAND, WA : Infant, small child killed in fiery Camano Island crash; driver airlifted on Tuesday, December 13, 2016
Camano Island, Washington
An infant and a small child were killed Tuesday morning when a car slid off an icy roadway and collided with a tree on Camano Island, then burst into flames, the Washington State Patrol reports.
The children's mother, who was driving, was seriously injured and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said Sgt. Mark Francis of the State Patrol. He called it a "very tragic" accident.
The woman was identified as Tanya Canell, 23, of Camano Island. She is in serious condition at Harborview.
Troopers and emergency crews with Camano Island Fire & Rescue responded to the scene, near Sunrise Boulevard and Camano Drive, at about 7:20 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash.
Francis said the car slid off the roadway in icy conditions and slammed into a tree, then became "fully engulfed in flames."
A 3-year-old child and a 5-month-old baby were pronounced dead at the scene. Their mother sustained serious injuries but was reported to be conscious as she was airlifted to the hospital.
"Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers," Camano Island Fire & Rescue said in a Twitter posting.
Francis said the weather was foggy and freezing at the time, and weather conditions definitely could have been a factor in the crash.
A preliminary investigation found that the car was heading north on Sunrise Boulevard when it slid off the roadway and into the tree.
The roadway will be closed at the scene indefinitely.
Friends have set up a GoFundMe account for the family.
