Columbus, OH : Ofc. Sean Johnson dies in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 270 south to S.R. 161 east on Thursday afternoon, May 19, 2016
An on-duty Hilliard Police Officer was killed in a motorcycle crash on the ramp from Interstate 270 south to S.R. 161 east on Thursday afternoon.
Officer Sean Johnson, who has been with HPD for 16 years, has been identified as the deceased. Johnson was on a training exercise when the crash happened.
Hilliard Police said Johnson is the first HPD officer to die in the line of duty since the division’s inception in 1960. No other police officers were injured, the department said.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 1:47 p.m.
Johnson leaves behind his children, aged 14 and 11, and his mother. He was a six-year veteran of the United States Air Force. Prior to joining HPD, Johnson served with the Ohio Investigative Unit and the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office.
Johnson was assigned to HPD’s Patrol Bureau for the past 16 years and recently became a member of the new Traffic Safety Unit. The four members of the unit were participating in a two-week-long training program with the motorcycles.
