Rollinsford, N.H : Boy hurt in crash Tuesday afternoon on Foundry Street in Rollinsford on July 15, 2014

An 11-year-old boy was airlifted to a Maine trauma hospital in serious condition Tuesday after being hit by a truck, but his mother later said in a social media post he is expected to survive.

Adrian Gallap was riding a bicycle with a friend when he collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Locust and Foundry streets, Rollinsford Police Chief Robert Ducharme said. The accident occurred at about 12:18 p.m.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, and from there he was airlifted to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Adrian's mother wrote on Facebook Tuesday afternoon he was expected to survive.

“Adrian was hit by car while out riding his bike today. He was airlifted to Maine Med. He will be ok! We will be here at least over night, maybe a few,” June O'Callaghan Gallup said.

Adrian had left Rollinsford Recreation's summer program shortly before the accident. He recently completed sixth grade at Rollinsford Grade School.

He was riding downhill on Locust Street with a friend when they entered Foundry Street just as the truck was approaching, the chief said. The truck was traveling north on Foundry Street at the time. The accident occurred near the American Legion hall.

Jarid Tomblin, 13, said he was riding with Adrian shortly before the accident. They had recently left the recreation program for lunch when Adrian and another friend rode down the steep hill on Locust Street.

Jarid, who did not witness the accident but spoke with a friend who did, said Adrian appeared unable to stop while riding down the hill.

“His brakes stopped working,” said Jarid, of Rollinsford. “He couldn't stop.”

Jarid has known Adrian since second grade, and described him as respectful to others and always there to help.

Adrian was wearing a helmet, and after hearing about the accident others now plan to wear them, too.

“I hope I see him soon,” Jarid said.

Describing the accident Ducharme said, “It was more of an angled collision. The truck driver attempted to turn off the roadway to the right a little as the bicyclists were attempting to make a left-hand turn and they collided.”

The second cyclist was not struck by the truck.

There is no evidence that speed or alcohol was a factor in the accident. No arrests have been made. The male driver, who is from Rollinsford, was not immediately identified.

“Right now, it does not appear the driver did anything wrong,” Ducharme said.

Police have interviewed several witnesses, including the truck driver. The crash remained under investigation Tuesday afternoon.

Ducharme described the incident as a “tragic accident.”
