Athol,MA : Fatal crash in Athol claims one life, sends two to hospital on May, Sunday 13th 2018
One person died and two others were injured following a single-car crash at 1060 South Athol Road on Sunday at about 8:30 p.m.
Athol and Orange Fire Departments responded to the scene. Around 8:43 p.m., the police were dispatched to the South Athol Road and Riverview Avenue area. According to the police, upon arrival the officer observed a “heavily damaged Nissan Altima that was lying on its roof after it apparently struck a tree.” The vehicle was traveling east on South Athol Road and had three occupants inside, according to a preliminary investigation by police.
Of the three individuals inside the car at the time of the crash, one person was ejected from the vehicle. It was reported the other two were trapped inside. First responders used a hydraulic extraction tool to free them. One victim was transported to the Athol Hospital, while the other was sent to a Worcester-area hospital.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Names of the victims have not yet been released.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been notified of the case to determine the cause and manner of death. The Athol Police and Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
