Authorities identify mother and child killed in southwest Birmingham crash

Authorities today released the names of a young mother and her toddler son killed in a horrific crash in southwest Birmingham on Sunday.The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victims as Kayla Nicole Jackson, 21, and her 3-year-old son, Zion Milik Jackson.

The crash happened midday Sunday on the Jefferson Avenue overpass above 24th Street S.W.The mother and child were passengers in a vehicle driven by the father, who is the crash's lone survivor, police said. The crash left the bed of a black truck hanging over the edge of the overpass, and resulted in authorities shutting down travel across the overpass in both directions.
