NEWTON, IL : Mattoon, Newton teens injured in Jasper County crash on Saturday, 22nd February, 2020

A Mattoon teenager and her Newton passenger were injured as the result of a crash late Saturday evening in rural Jasper County.

The Illinois State Police reported that Hailey M. Cook, 18, of Mattoon was driving her car north on Jasper County Road 800E approaching the intersection of 1600N when the crash occurred at 10:04 p.m., approximately 5 miles north of Lis.

Cook later reported to the State Police that she was unfamiliar with the area and did not see the slight curve of the road to the east. Her car left the roadway to the west at that curve before running head on into the west side ditch.

Ambulances took Cook to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham and her 18-year-old passenger, Peyton M. Wills of Newton, to Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney for treatment of injuries. Cook was ticketed for improper lane usage.
