Lynchburg,VA : Two elementary school students injured in vehicle, bus collision on May, Wednesday 2nd 2018
Two elementary school students suffered minor injuries after a vehicle collided with a school bus in Campbell County on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.
The wreck occurred at about 4 p.m. at Sunnymeade Road and Dodgeburn Circle, according to State Police Trooper T. Wertz.
The bus was traveling westbound on Sunnymeade Road when it slowed as it approached a stop on its route. An eastbound Jeep stopped for the bus, but the driver of a Ford pickup truck following the Jeep was blinded by a sun glare and did not brake in time to avoid rear-ending the Jeep, Wertz said.
The collision propelled the Jeep into the front end of the bus, Wertz said.
The bus was carrying 33 Rustburg Elementary School students at the time of the crash, according to Campbell County Public Schools Director of Operations Tim Holden. Two sustained “minor injuries” and received treatment on the scene but were released to their parents.
Holden said the bus appeared to be virtually undamaged.
No one else was injured in the crash, Wertz said.
The driver of the Ford was charged with reckless driving, Wertz said.
Sunnymeade Road was closed for about two hours as crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles and clear debris.
Campbell County Public Safety and the Rustburg Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the crash.
