Battle Ground, WA : Man arrested after Battle Ground crash injuring girl, mother, and brother on Wednesday evening, september 10, 2014

A Battle Ground family is coping with three of their members being hurt in a crash police believe was caused by a drunken driver. Their church is stepping up to support them through this tough time, and they’re asking for the public’s help. The crash happened Wednesday evening at the intersection of NE 219th Street and NE 182nd Ave. Police said Shane Turner was driving his pickup truck west on NE 219th Street. The front of Turner’s truck slammed into the side of a minivan driving south on NE 182nd when he went through the intersection. Ana Konovalchik was driving the van with two of her children, a nine-year-old daughter and a 13-year-old son, inside. All three of the van’s occupants were taken to local hospitals. The boy was treated and released. Konovalchik remains at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver. Her older daughter, who wasn’t in the crash, told her mother has a lot of abdominal pain, involving her spleen and liver. “She’s doing pretty well. You know, there’s a lot of pain management,” Pastor Carlson said. The nine-year-old girl is in critical condition, and sedated, with life-threatening injuries at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. The girl had major surgery on Friday to remove one of her kidneys, and parts of her liver and spleen. She will also eventually need surgery on her face to repair a broken jawbone and broken bones around her eye. The Konovalchik family attends Brush Prairie Baptist Church in Vancouver. Their church family, led by Pastor Bob Carlson, has been by their side since the accident happened. Pastor Carlson said the nine-year-old girl took the brunt of the impact in the crash. "She was there on the driver's side behind her mom, up in her booster seat so she really took that impact very hard and was very seriously injured on her left side,” Pastor Carlson said. According to a police report, the officer who first arrived on scene found a bottle of Black Velvet on the floorboard of Turner’s truck. The contents of the bottle were spilled on the floor and on the side of the driver’s door. Turner also had a wet substance on the front of his shirt. Police also found three bottles of beer in Turner’s truck, and said turner “performed poorly” on a field sobriety test. Turner also wouldn’t take a breath test. They observed him with droopy, bloodshot and watery eyes, and said he admitted to drinking two beers before the crash. Police said Turner told a detective at the scene, “I made a California stop and slowed to about five miles per hour,” before he crashed into the Konovalchik’s minivan. "We often don't think how the choices we make affect others in big ways and small ways,” said Pastor Carlson. As a result of the crash, Ana Konovalchik is unable to work. Her husband, who’s also taking time off work now, and older daughter and son, have to travel between Portland and Vancouver to be able to spend time with her and her nine-year-old daughter. Pastor Carlson said the church set up a GoFundMe.com account on Friday to help the family with travel expenses, food, and long-term care for the nine-year-old girl. "Their response was just surprised that people would do something, that people they didn't know would want to care for them,” said Pastor Carlson. “They’re wonderful hardworking folks that don’t imagine people helping them.” Turner made his first court appearance on Thursday, according to our news partners at The Columbian. He was released on a $25,000 bail. He told the judge, “I have a family who very much would like me to come home, work and put food on the table.” He will be arraigned on vehicular assault charges on September 25, 2014 in Clark County Superior Court. A woman who answered the door at Turner’s house Friday evening declined to let KATU News talk to him. “We are broken people in a broken world. That doesn’t excuse the bad things that happen and the evil things that people do, but how we survive as broken people in a broken world is by God’s grace and mercy,” Pastor Carlson said.
