Madisonville, KY : Two killed in Nebo Road collision on Monday, 14th May 2018

Two area residents are dead following a collision Monday outside Madisonville.

According to the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office, Aaron M. Utterback, 27, of Madisonville was driving a Volkswagen Cabriolet southbound on Nebo Road at approximately 8:19 a.m. when, for an unknown reason, he exited the shoulder of the roadway and entered a grassy area near the Marathon gas station. Utterback apparently attempted to re-enter the roadway, but crossed the southbound lane and entered the northbound lane.

Mary Turner, 70, of Dixon, was driving a Toyota sedan northbound at the time and was struck by Utterback's vehicle head-on. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by Hopkins County Coroner Dennis Mayfield. Nebo Road was closed for approximately two hours while the roadway was cleared.

Circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation.

While he can not yet determine what caused Utterback to leave the roadway prior to the accident, HCSO Maj. Will Coursey said it does appear that Utterback was driving his vehicle at a speed higher than the posted 55 mph limit.

Coursey added it is typical for medical examiners to run a toxicology report on subjects in an incident of this nature. The results, however, likely will not be available for about a month, he said.

The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Madisonville Police Department, Madisonville Fire Department and Manitou Fire Department.
