Newport News, VA : 18-year-old man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a crash on May, Thursday, 11th 2017
An 18-year-old man was killed and two others were seriously injured in a crash on Interstate 64 in Chesapeake early Thursday morning, an official said.
The crash happened about 3 a.m. on I-64 westbound near the I-464 split, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.Investigators think the 2003 Hyundai ran off the interstate and overturned onto its side into a ditch. The vehicle was submerged in about 4 feet of water, Anaya said.
A passerby saw the vehicle and waved down troopers who were nearby. The troopers jumped into the water and were able to rescue the 19-year-old driver and a 21-year-old in the back seat, Anaya said.
Both men were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, she said.
Firefighters had to extricate the 18-year-old front-seat passenger. He was taken to the hospital where he later died, Anaya said.
All three people are believed to be military members from outside the state. Police think alcohol was a factor in the crash. Charges are pending, Anaya said.
