New Smyrna Beach , FL : Motorcyclist was killed after he drove into Path on SR 415 on Saturday December 13th 2014

An Ormond Beach motorcyclist was killed Saturday afternoon after a motorist drove into the motorcycle’s path on State Road 415 in the New Smyrna Beach area, troopers said.

Robert Clayton, 61, was northbound on S.R. 415 when Katherine Johnson, who was southbound on the same road, tried to make a left turn onto State Road 44 shortly before 1:40 p.m. Saturday, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Clayton attempted to apply the brakes on his bike before dropping it to the ground, but he was struck by Johnson’s Lincoln town car, troopers said.

The Ormond Beach man, who was not wearing a helmet, died at Bert Fish Medical Center, while Johnson, 82, of New Smyrna Beach, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center, according to the report.

The intersection of S.R. 415 and S.R. 44 was closed for about an hour as troopers worked to clear the scene of the crash, which remains under investigation, FHP spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said.

She said charges are pending.
