Ko Olina, HI : Waianae man dies in single-vehicle collision in Ko Olina early Sunday morning, June 26, 2016

Honolulu Police say a Waianae man was killed in a single-vehicle collision in Ko Olina early Sunday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m.

35-year-old Lawrence Lucero was traveling westbound on Farrington Highway at a high rate of speed.

He lost control of his SUV, went up a grass embankment at the Ali'i Nui Drive exit and slammed into a palm tree. Lucero died at the scene.

Ashley Kuoha was driving past the scene and recorded the mangled mess on her cell phone.

"I was leaving this morning to pick up my husband from work and as I was coming over, all I could see was tons of ambulance, fire trucks and it was a nightmare," she said.

Police say Lucero was the lone occupant in the SUV.

"It was mangled it was just crushed, crushed upside down," said Kuoha. "I was like 'oh my god' my heart was just pounding."

Daylight reveals a clearer picture of the damage caused by the crash. There remains scattered glass, vehicle debris and a palm tree broken in half.

Kuoha says she takes Farrington Highway to work everyday. She notices drivers speeding all the time and that the location of the Sunday's crash is notorious for traffic accidents.

"They need to slow down, just slow down," she said. "This is getting ridiculous, there's too many fatalities down here. I don't know if it's drinking and driving or people falling asleep at the wheel, but that particular area has always had accidents."

While speed is a contributing factor, it is unknown if Lucero was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

HPD says there have been 22 traffic-related deaths on Oahu so far this year compared to 27 at this time in 2015.
