Baton Rouge,LA : Infant dies after crash on I-12 near Covington on May, Wednesday 2nd 2018
A Hammond man is facing multiple charges after an infant riding in the back seat of his vehicle died from injuries sustained during a crash on Wednesday.
Errol Nugent, 62, was arrested after the crash on I-12 near Covington that claimed the life of 1-month-old Bryce Martin, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police. Three other people in the vehicle were injured; Martin was not properly restrained, the release said.
The crash occurred about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday after Nugent, the driver, missed an exit to US 190 South. Nugent then allegedly pulled onto the median, and when he pulled the car back onto I-12 his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer headed eastbound, according to the release. The driver of the truck was unhurt.
The 1-month-old sustained "severe injuries" in the crash and was transported to Lakeview Hospital in critical condition. He was later airlifted to Children's Hospital in New Orleans, where he died.
Officers suspect Nugent, who was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital with moderate injuries, was impaired at the time of the crash, the release said. A warrant for a blood sample was obtained, which will be sent to a LSP crime lab for an analysis.
Nugent was arrested and booked into St. Tammany Parish Jail on counts of vehicular homicide, three counts of vehicular negligent injuring, two counts of improper child restraint, careless operation, and operating a vehicle with a suspended license. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
