Springfield Township, PA : Mom, 16-year-old son dead, 12-year-old hospitalized after crash on Route 711 in Fayette County on Friday afternoon, December 26, 2014
Normalville, Pennsylvania
Two people died as a result of injuries in a single-vehicle crash Friday afternoon near Normalville, Fayette County.
Suzanne Marie Williams, 37, of Mill Run, the operator of a sport utility vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene on Route 711 in Springfield. Skylar Williams, 16, of Monessen, a male passenger, was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office. Another male passenger, age 12, also was taken to the Oakland hospital. His condition was not available Friday evening.
Suzanne Marie Williams was driving west on Route 711, also known as Springfield Pike, at 12:47 p.m. when she lost control on a curve, police said. The SUV went off the right side of the road and hit a utility pole.
The 12-year-old was listed in “unstable condition,” police said.
Merle Schomer said he was in his front yard in Springfield when he saw a maroon SUV traveling from the direction of Normalville. He noticed the female driver was attempting to straighten the vehicle after swerving.
Schomer said he saw the SUV go off the road and hit an embankment and the pole.
Mark Bigam, chief of the Normalville Area Volunteer Fire Department, said both the driver and one of the passengers was ejected.
Schomer, who is a nurse, ran to the vehicle while neighbors dialed 911. He said the driver was unresponsive, and one passenger was unconscious but breathing.
“I was just praying for them the whole time,” he said.
Bigam said one person was trapped in the wreckage. It took emergency personnel an hour to free the passenger because electrical wires on the utility pole were sparking and West Penn Power had to cut the power, he said.
Schomer said that in the past three years, there have been five accidents near his home, some of which ended up in his front yard.
“They go too fast,” he said.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
