The pedestrian, who was identified as Frank Robinson, 82, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four people were inside the Cobalt at the time of the crash. No other injuries were reported.

Smiley said the driver had the right of way.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Frank Robinson," said Aimee Boyd, vice president of communications for the Kentucky Derby Festival. "He was always a supporter of the Kentucky Derby Festival's road races."

Boyd said Robinson was among five local runners who ran every miniMarathon together for more than 30 years, beginning with the first race in 1974. Friends and family called them "The Elite Club."

In a previous interview with KDF, Robinson said, "If you want to see what a great race it has become... go and see the beautiful colors and people in motion. Moving fast toward you, it looks like a rainbow coming to swoop you up."
