Piedmont, SC : Elderly man hit, killed by teen driving to school in Anderson County Tuesday morning, September 27, 2016
The coroner said an elderly man was struck and killed by a teen driver in Anderson County Tuesday morning.
Coroner Greg Shore said 76-year-old James Carpenter was in front of his house on Highway 17 when he was struck by a car.
Troopers said the 16-year-old was driving a Toyota Celica.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m. near Shiloh Church Road.
Deputy Coroner Don McCown said Carpenter was crossing the street to speak with a neighbor after taking his trash can to the road when he was hit by the car.
Carpenter died at the scene from multiple traumatic injuries, McCown said.
The teen driver was not hurt. McCown said the boy was headed to class at Wren High School when the crash occurred.
Troopers are investigating the crash.
The SC Highway Patrol MAIT team was called out to reconstruct the incident.
Family members said Carpenter was a great father and grandfather. He and his wife Jane were married for 53 years.
