State police say a western New York teenager has been charged with drunken driving after a New Year’s Eve crash killed a 19-year-old passenger.

Troopers say 18-year-old Thomas Flynn of Hornell was driving on county Route 29 around 10 p.m. Wednesday when he skidded off the road and hit a tree in a yard in the Steuben County town of Canisteo, in the Southern Tier 60 miles south of Rochester.

Passenger Hunter Kolesar of Hornell was taken to the hospital in his hometown before being airlifted to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania, where he died Thursday.

Flynn also was taken to the Pennsylvania hospital, where he’s listed in stable condition.

Troopers have charged him with driving while intoxicated and say other charges are pending.
