South Burlington, Vermont
A construction worker was struck and killed by a car on Interstate 89 late Wednesday night.
"He was pronounced dead at the scene," Vt. State Police Lt. Garry Scott said.
Police say Robert Stanhope, 61, of Richford, was removing temporary reflective fog line markers on I-89 northbound near Exit 13 at mile marker 86 in South Burlington. They say he was working for the Whitcomb Construction Company.
Then, at about 11:15 p.m., police say Emma Gentry, 22, of South Burlington, struck and killed Stanhope with her vehicle.
A Northern EMS crew happened to be traveling northbound on the interstate at the same time and pulled over to help. But police say Stanhope could not be saved.
"This is still a very active investigation. We're working in conjunction with the Department of Labor to follow up on the construction company and what they have going on," Scott explained.
Police say Gentry was not impaired, but the investigation is still ongoing. She was not hurt.
Investigators say they will be looking into the conditions of the construction zone at the time of the accident, including lighting and cone markers, and also if Whitcomb Construction had any prior Agency of Transportation violations.
"That's why were in contact with the Department of Labor, to see what the practices are, what's normal practices. And then we'll get all the information, put it together and most likely send it along for review at the state's attorney's office," Scott said.
Both Whitcomb Construction and the Agency of Transportation, which oversees all road construction projects in the state, declined to comment. The state's attorney will review the case to see if charges are needed.
