Bryan, TX :Semi-Truck's Load Strikes Bridge On Highway 6 on Sunday, July 5th 2015
The southbound lanes of Highway 6 and the westbound lanes of FM 158 over Highway 6 are now open after an 18-wheeler struck the overpass. The massive spools of wire damaged the bridge and two other vehicles on the road.Closures at this location will come back later this summer. The Boonville Road / William Joel Bryan Bridge has some battered beams after a very odd crash on Highway 6 in Bryan.Sunday night two 20,000 pound spools of heavy wire struck the bridge after police say the driver got lost and had turned around after heading north under the same bridge and cleared it.One spool then hit a Jeep Cherokee sending the 60-year-old driver to the hospital with minor injuries.Chunks of concrete also hit a minivan according to police.Monday, the southbound lanes of Highway 6 were still shut down at the bridge, forcing drivers like Jasper Gates to the access road."It's a little frustrating because I've been driving since like a while ago," Gates said.Monday morning TxDOT crews are chipping away some of the concrete to get a better look at the damage. But you can easily see where some chunks of concrete were knocked out by that giant spool.
Bob Colwell withTxDOT doesn't know how much repairs will cost."We have knocked off the concrete that was just barely hanging there. We did some sound checks on it. What we're doing now is making some temporary repairs," said Colwell with the TxDOT Bryan District."TxDOT is also issuing a contract for permanent repairs which will mean another closure at the same spot."We will have to close 158 and State Highway 6 we want to try to do that before the Aggies get back," Colwell said. The driver of the 18-wheeler was ticketed for exceeding maximum height requirements.TxDOT says the trucking company will reimburse it for repairs. The truck driver did have a proper permit according to police but failed to stay on his route.
