Traffic in the area of The X is tied up after a car struck a fire hydrant, breaking a water stem and causing a large sinkhole near the intersection of Sumner Avenue and Daytona Street.
Ryan Walsh, spokesman for the Springfield Police Department, said Sumner Avenue is closed from The X to the White Street intersection as crews work to fix the break.
Department of Public Works Director Christopher Cignoli said traffic may be completely blocked on Sumner Avenue for several more hours as city crews work to clear the area and fill the 35-foot sinkhole. The street will not be completely open to traffic at least until Wednesday and perhaps a day or two after that.
