Marion, VA: 7-year-old dies in crash on I-81 on Sunday, July 26th 2015
A 7-year-old girl is killed in a crash on Interstate 81 in Smyth County, Virginia.The single-vehicle wreck occurred at 11:13 a.m. Sunday at mile marker 53. According to the Virginia State Police, the driver of a 1999 Ford Explorer was traveling south when she ran off the left side of the highway, crossed back over the southbound lanes, overturned, and struck the guardrail.There were two adults and three children in the SUV, but only one child was wearing a seat belt.Alana J. Harris, 7, of San Angelo, Texas, was ejected during the crash. She died at Smyth County Community Hospital. A 10-year-old girl who also wasn't wearing a seat belt was taken to Johnson City Medical Center with serious injuries. A 14-year-old boy who was wearing a seat belt was taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The adult passenger was taken to Smyth County Community Hospital with unknown injuries.The driver, Kanda K Foster, 39, of San Angelo, Texas, is charged with reckless driving and failure to secure a child in a seat belt. Police say fatigue was a factor in the crash.
