A major road in Rock Hill was shut down Wednesday after a multi-vehicle crash, according to police.
The wreck happened just before 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Heckle Boulevard and Crawford Road. Officials have not released many details, but confirmed that several people were injured.
Police were diverting traffic around the scene, and asked drivers to avoid the area. They said the road would be shut down for some time.
Officials confirmed that three vehicles were involved in the crash and six people were injured. They said one person had to be extricated from a vehicle. From WBTV's Sky 3 helicopter, one person could be seen getting airlifted from the crash site.
Neighbor Angela Nance said her father-in-law was hurt in the crash and taken to the hospital. He has since been released from the ER.
“A lot of officers was passing us in a high-speed chase so I proceeded to come home and just as I did, I realized my father-in-law had been involved in an accident.," said Nance.
Police confirmed that one driver was attempting to flee from officers when the crash happened. Officials said the officers were trying to pull the driver over. They said the suspect tried to run from the officers on foot, but was eventually caught and detained.
They said they are now looking into the possibility of criminal activity involving the driver that fled from police. That person's name has not been released yet.
The Rock Hill Police Department Serious Accident Reconstruction TEAM and the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team are both investigating the accident
