Warren, NJ : New Kent father killed, children hurt in New Jersey crash on Monday night, December 22, 2014
A Virginia man died when the car he was driving with his three children inside struck a tree after crashing into two cars Monday night on Interstate 78 westbound at mile-marker 37.9, according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeff Flynn.
Kevin Hutchins, 54, of New Kent, Virginia, died at the scene of the crash that occurred at 7:06 p.m., Flynn said. Hutchins' three children, ranging in age from 14 to 11, were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset with non- life threatening injuries.
Flynn said the crash started when the 2007 Honda Odyssey that Hutchins was driving crashed into the rear of a 2013 Audi S5, driven by Joseph Calise, 36, of Hoboken. The Audi ran off the highway to the right, hitting a tree. The Honda struck a 2010 Nissan Altima, driven by Arnold Holtz, 61, of Bridgewater.
The Nissan veered off the road to the left, hitting a guard rail and winding up in the center median, Flynn said. The Honda ran off the highway to the right, striking a tree.
Flynn said Calise was transported to Morristown Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries. Holtz was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset, also with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Police said the accident is under invstigation.
