Newton County, TX : 1 dead, sister injured after car strikes tree on Texas 87 south of Bleakwood on Saturday afternoon, February 11, 2017

A Burkeville woman died and her sister is seriously injured after a crash on Saturday afternoon in Newton County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened at about 3 p.m. on Texas 87 south of Bleakwood, when a vehicle driven by Cynthia Erwin Wilhoit, 64, traveled off the roadway to the right, according to Sgt. Stephanie Davis.

In an attempt to get the vehicle back on the road, Wilhoit veered to the left, Davis said. The vehicle spun across the north and southbound lanes of Texas 87 and struck a tree on the passenger side of the vehicle.

The passenger, Tangye Dee Erwin, 52, was transported by helicopter to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at 4:58 p.m., Davis said.
Wilhoit, of Orange, was undergoing treatment at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston on Saturday, Davis said.
