Belton ,SC : Belton police officer injuredin crash and blocked belton highway on Saturday night ,May 16th 2015

A crash involving a Belton police cruiser was blocking Belton Highway at Broadway Lake Road on Saturday night, according to the Belton Police Department.

The crash happened just before 10 p.m. according to police.

Chief Tommy Clamp said a Belton police officer had dropped off a suspect at the Anderson County Detention Center and was on his way back to Belton to assist another officer on an emergency call when the crash occurred.

Clamp said the police cruiser was struck by a small Ford pick up truck. Clamp said the officer's had operated the lights and sirens on the vehicle before the crash occurred.

The driver of the pickup was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, Clamp said. The officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The SC Highway Patrol MAIT team is investigating the crash.
