Winston Salem, NC : 2 killed, 1 seriously hurt in rash of wrecks in Forsyth County over the weekend on Saturday, January, 27th 2018
Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Forsyth County marked a dangerous time on the roads this weekend, with two females killed and two more serious wrecks in less than 10 hours. The three most serious crashes occurred within 90 minutes Saturday evening.
The first happened about 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 421 south just past the Lewisville-Clemmons Road exit, said Trooper K.J. Batulan with the Highway Patrol. Britzel Santillan, 33, of Ardsley Street, was killed when she failed to brake for traffic, he said.
Santillan was driving a 1996 Nissan Quest and plowed into the back end of a Ford Super Duty truck, Batulan said. The pickup was stopped for traffic ahead of it.
Santillan was going the speed limit of 65 mph and showed no signs of braking. Santillan, who was wearing her seatbelt, died at the scene of the crash, Batulan said. The male driver of the pickup and his passenger were uninjured in the wreck.
Batulan said it’s unclear why Santillan, who was the only person in the minivan, failed to stop.
“Alcohol is not a factor,” he said. “We’re unsure if she was distracted with the radio. We have her cell phone and we’re going to investigate to see if she was on it.”
Batulan was uncertain when the Highway Patrol would have results from that investigation.
About an hour later, the Highway Patrol investigated their second fatal wreck of the evening, involving a 13-year-old. Nevashia Mitchell of Winston-Salem, was killed when she and her 12-year-old friend tried to cross Interstate 40 near Peters Creek Parkway, the agency said. The girls were both wearing dark clothing and lived near where the crash happened.
Mitchell and her friend made it across the eastbound lanes, however, Mitchell was struck by a Ford Focus when trying to cross the westbound lanes of the interstate, the Highway Patrol said. She struck a metal guardrail and died at the scene of the crash. The female driver of the Focus wasn’t speeding and won’t be charged in the wreck.
The investigating trooper, B.M. Bush, called it, “an unfortunate incident.”
In a separate wreck on Saturday evening, a Winston-Salem man remains in critical condition Sunday evening. Charles Douglas Moore, 54, of West Sixth Street, was hospitalized after he was hit by a 2006 Mercedes Benz C280, police said.
Moore was walking on New Walkertown Road near Dellabrook Road about 7 p.m. when he was struck by the 68-year-old Winston-Salem woman driving north and east in the far right lane of New Walkertown Road.
Police said it was unclear if Moore was walking along the curb or trying to cross the road.
Lt. Scott Wright said police are still not certain what Moore was doing at the time of the wreck. The investigation has been turned over to the traffic enforcement division, Wright said.
The final serious wreck of the weekend involved a wrong-way crash early Sunday morning on U.S. 52 south. A woman driving northbound on U.S. 52 south about 2:50 a.m. near Business 40-U.S. 421 hit two oncoming cars, police said.
The drivers of vehicles going the correct way were treated at the scene, police said. The driver of the vehicle going northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 52 was taken to the hospital in serious condition on Sunday. Additional information, including the names of the people involved in the crash and any possible charges, was not available Sunday evening.
