Cape Coral, FL : Cape Coral canal car crash leaves one child dead, another critical on Wednesday, 25th November, 2020
A child has died after the car he was in went into a Cape Coral canal late Wednesday night.
Neighbors say police spent much of the night searching for the people who crashed in the canal near Northeast 31st Street and Northeast Fifth Place in Cape Coral, using divers and a helicopter.
The Cape Coral Police Department says the car was eastbound on Northeast 31st Street around 11:56 p.m., approaching the intersection of Northeast Fifth Place when it left the roadway and continued east across the vacant lot in the 3100 block of Northeast 5th Place. The car struck the elevated canal bank and become airborne before landing in the canal. It was completely submerged by the time the CCPD arrived, with both children trapped inside.
All four occupants were transported to a local hospital, where one of the children later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The other was subsequently transported to Golisano Children’s Hospital for treatment.
The adult passengers were Kenneth Wayne Lawson and Julia Ann Drudy, both from Cape Coral, both of whom only suffered minor injuries.
The CCPD says alcohol or drugs are a factor in the crash.
