Detroit, MI ; 49-year-old man killed after striking I-96 overpass on Saturday morning, October 4, 2014
A Detroit man was killed early Saturday morning when his car traveled up the embankment on Interstate 96 and hit part of a bridge overpass.
Dion Cedric Vanleer, 49, was transported to a hospital after the crash where he was pronounced dead.
Vanleer was driving on eastbound I-96 at Joy Road at about 1:25 a.m. when his 2006 Chevrolet Malibu left the roadway, drove up the embankment and struck the concrete facing of the bridge overpass there. A police investigation determined he was driving at a high speed when the incident occurred. The car was damaged and fell back into the roadway, blocking the right and center lanes of the freeway, police say.
Police did not say whether alcohol or seat belt use was a factor in the crash.
The eastbound lanes of I-96 were reopened at 3:48 a.m. The investigation is ongoing.
