Griffin ,GA : One killed, eight injured in wreck on I-75 on May, Thursday 10th 2018
One child was killed and eight others injured in the Thursday morning wreck on Interstate 75 in Locust Grove.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, at about 8:08 a.m., a trooper responded to a collision that occurred on I-75 northbound at mile marker 212 in Henry County. A 2002 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling northbound on I-75 in the right lane and the driver attempted to change lanes, traveled into the middle lane and overcorrected her steering and lost control.
According to the State Patrol, the Mercury traveled in a clockwise rotation and began to overturn. The Mercury continued to overturn striking a 2012 Nissan Sentra that was traveling northbound in the left lane of I-75. After the secondary impact, the Mercury traveled back across the roadway onto the east shoulder of the interstate.
As the Mercury overturned, all nine passengers were ejected. After the secondary impact, the Nissan traveled into the west emergency lane striking the guard rail face, rotating about 360 degrees and came to rest in the west emergency lane.
As a result of the collision, an 11-year-old female was fatally injured, according to the State Patrol. The eight other occupants were transported to different hospitals by EMS. Three were airlifted and five by ground transportation, according to the State Patrol, while the driver of the Nissan had a complaint of injury, but was not transported.
As of 3 p.m., Thursday, the State Patrol said, “all occupants have not been identified, nor has next of kin/family been contacted. There were six children and three adults in the Mountaineer."
During the initial response, all northbound lanes of I-75 were shut down with traffic being diverted off at exit 205/Georgia Highway 16. Henry County Fire Department, Locust Grove Police Department and Henry County Police Department responded, along with three air ambulances landing on the Interstate to transport the injured.
