Portland, MI : Motocross racer has died after crashing during practice at the Portland Trail Riders track On Sunday, May 8th, 2016
A vintage motocross racer has died after crashing during practice at the Portland Trail Riders track on Sunday.
Kevin Stone, 61, has raced in Ironman and Vintage races since 2006, according to the American Motorcyclist Association race results website.
Stone was racing his vintage motorcycle Sunday when he crashed on one of the jumps. The paramedics jumped into action and headed to take care of his injuries. Aero Med was then called out to the track and landed at the starting gate.
"Because there were so many medics there and because they knew of the condition of this gentleman, that's why the helicopter was called in," Terri Sweet, secretary for the Portland Trail Riders said.
The track has to comply with several rules to make the track safe for riders and if for any reason someone is injured, medics are standing by to assist in any way needed. During Saturday's practice, there were no injuries that medics were called out
for; on Sunday, the medics went out for at least three different riders, some just as a precaution.
"There has to be an ambulance there all the time. If there is not an ambulance there they can't run the race," Sweet said.
After the medics were called onto the track for Stone, the track shut down and no one continued racing. It stayed that way until after the Aero Med had taken flight. The same thing happened a while later when a young racer missed a turn because
the throttle on his bike stuck, causing him to go into a turn too fast and fly over top of the turn and hit a fence. Races were halted until the boy was taken to the ambulance; he was also transported to the hospital.
"The medics were right on it, they responded very quickly, the medics themselves came in at the end of the day and wanted to thank our track crew for how quickly they responded and how well they helped the paramedics get everything handled,"
Sweet said.
Fellow racers say that Stone was one of the toughest but nicest competitors out there. Several members of the Michigan Vintage Motocross Racing Series Facebook group shared their condolences and even shared stories of their days at the
track with him.
"All of us are affected by what happened and obviously with social media you can see a whole bunch of other people are affected," Sweet Said.
