Police say two children have died after they and a woman were hit by a vehicle. The driver accused of hitting them has been charged.

The accident happened around 6:17 p.m. Thursday at 837 Fairview Road.

Police say Aurora Garcia, 72, was crossing an intersection with the children when a driver in a 2003 Acura approached the same intersection at Fairview Road. The driver did not see them crossing the road and hit all three, according to police.

Garcia and the children, identified by police as 10-year-old Alexander Bautista-Gomez and 5-year-old Milena Alejandro-Bautista, were all taken to Mission Hospital.

Police said they think Garcia was the children’s grandmother.

Police say the children did not survive their injuries. Garcia is being treated at Mission Hospital. Her injuries are described as non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the driver, Elvin Jossue Hernandez, has been arrested for not having a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

As of Friday morning, police say he’s still in jail.

The crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Asheville Police Department at (828) 252-1110.

Buncombe County Schools released a statement Friday saying, “our thoughts are with the children’s family and school communities during this very difficult time.”

The district will have crisis teams of counselors and social workers available Friday for students and teachers. They say the teams will remain as long as necessary.
