San Angelo, TX : One people killed, two injured in car crash on on U.S. 87, 2.2 mile southeast of San Angelo on Saturday, February 14, 2015

A San Angelo man was killed in an early morning crash just southeast of the city.

Angel Nazario Zamarripa, 21, died at Shannon Medical Center from injuries sustained in a crash on U.S. 87, 2.2 mile southeast of San Angelo, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety news release.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Saturday, a Hyundai Elantra passenger car had been traveling northbound on the southbound lane of U.S. 87, according to the release.

A Chevrolet Malibu passenger car was southbound on the same roadway.

The Hyundai struck the Chevy head on, the release stated. Both vehicles collided on the driver's side.

The Hyundai came to rest on the inside lane of U.S. 87 facing southeast and the Chevy came to rest in the south ditch of U.S. 87 facing east.

The driver of the Hyundai, Jamie Celest Sawyer, 18, of San Angelo was taken to Shannon with incapacitating injuries, according to the release.

Zamarripa had been driving the Chevy, the released stated, and was accompanied by passenger Viktoria Marie Williamson, 19, of San Angelo.

Both were taken to Shannon for incapacitating injuries where Zamarripa was later pronounced dead by Dr. Kelly Koenig.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to the release. Trooper Matthew Walts, of the San Angelo Highway Patrol, is investigating.
