An Amherst County man was killed Thursday morning in a single-vehicle accident on Warrick Barn Road near Piney River.
Family members identified the man as Douglas Toliver, who they said lived just two driveways down the road from where the car overturned on the right side of the eastbound lane. They said a woman also was in the car at the time, and witnesses said she was taken to the hospital.
Toliver’s son, Antwain Campbell, said he was at work when he got a call about the crash around 9:20 a.m. and rushed to the scene. He said his father had lived on that section of Warrick Barn Road for a long time and knew the area well.Marvin Toliver, who identified himself as Douglas Toliver’s cousin, said their family lives scattered throughout the area. Once getting word of the crash, he said he called Campbell to notify him what happened, having grown up and gone to school with him.
“He was a good dude,” Toliver said of his cousin. “He’d do anything for anybody.”
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller confirmed Douglas Toliver’s identity and said the passenger transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries is a 30-year-old woman from Amherst.
The crash occurred at around 9 a.m. when the Ford Crown Victoria Toliver was driving crossed the center line, then re-entered the northbound lane before running off the right side of the road to strike a utility pole and overturning, coming to rest on its roof.
Agencies responding to the scene included the Virginia State Police, Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Public Safety, Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, Pedlar Volunteer Fire Department, Amherst Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Emergency crews and law enforcement were leaving the scene at around 11 a.m. and workers were setting up a new utility pole at around 11:30 a.m.
