A 17-year-old Mill Creek boy was killed Saturday in a fatal crash in Wills Township.
According to a press release from the La Porte County Sheriff's Department, Aiden Short, 17, of rural Mill Creek died after his Chrysler mini-van struck a stump, went airborne and collided into several trees off CR700 East. Aiden was the lone occupant of the mini-van and had been wearing a seatbelt. Toxicology tests determined alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
According to the release, deputies were dispatched to the crash at 5:53 a.m. Saturday. The incident took place in the 2600 north block of CR700 East in rural Wills Township. Fireman from the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department were the first emergency personnel to arrive on scene. They determined the mini-van driver was unresponsive. The driver was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by the La Porte County Coroner's Office.
The crash investigation conducted by sheriff's deputies determined the 2014 Chrysler Town & Country mini-van had been traveling south on CR700 East in the 2600 north block when, for an unknown reason, it left the west side of the the roadway. After leaving the roadway, the Chrysler mini-van struck a stump, went airborne and collided into several trees prior to coming to a rest.
The La Porte County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by the New Carlisle Police Department, La Porte County Emergency Medical Service, the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department and the La Porte County Coroner's Office.
