Warren, MI : 37-year-old man killed in pedestrian collision with multiple drivers at Schoenherr Road at Leonard Avenue early Thursday, January 21, 2016
The investigation of a traffic crash that killed a pedestrian in Warren early Thursday took an unusual turn nearly three hours after the tragic incident.
Detectives were notified the victim, identified as 37-year-old city resident Daniel Gary Rook, was hit not only once, but a second and third time. One of those drivers fled and remained at large by late afternoon, police said.
Reading from a press release, Lt. Cortland Larry said Rook was struck on Schoenherr Road at Leonard Avenue, five blocks south of Nine Mile Road, at 6:57 a.m. The driver of the northbound 2009 Kia Sportage that hit him –- identified as a 41-year-old woman from Clinton Township –- stayed at the scene and has cooperated with investigators.
Larry gave this continuing account: A Good Samaritan motorist saw a body lying in the road, so he parked his vehicle in a southbound lane to exit and direct traffic.
Police officials initially believed Rook was struck once in the left lane of northbound Schoenherr, which has two lanes in each direction and functioning streetlights. Rook, who resided in the neighborhood, wore dark clothes at the time.
Rook was taken to St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren where doctors pronounced him dead.
At approximately 9:45 a.m., however, investigators received a telephone call with new details. The witness reported the driver of a Chrysler PT Cruiser went around the Good Samaritan but drove over Rook. A 24-year-old Warren man driving a Pontiac Grand Prix also went around the Good Samaritan then hit the pedestrian lying in the road before collided with the rear of the PT Cruiser.
The woman driving the Chrysler exited her vehicle, yelled at the Grand Prix driver who also had stopped and then she fled. Officials aren’t sure she knew she stuck Rook. But officials want to speak with her. She is described as black, in her late 30s, with a ponytail and 5 feet 5 inches tall. The PT Cruiser is red or burgundy in color and has rear-end damage.
