ST. JOHNS COUNTY, FL : 4-year-old boy, woman from Canada die in I-95 crash on Monday, January 2nd 2017
A 4-year-old boy and a 32-year-old woman from Canada were killed and two others were injured when an SUV veered off Interstate 95 in St. Johns County, slammed into a tree and overturned, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Troopers identified the victims as Ayaan Haque, 4, and Nazia Hossain, 32, of Mississauga, Ontario. The crash, which was reported about 2 p.m., shut down all northbound lanes of I-95 just south of the International Golf Parkway interchange for several hours, backing up traffic for miles.
When first responders arrived at the scene, four people were found trapped inside the overturned gray Infiniti FX35, according to St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
Hossain, the driver, was pronounced dead and Haque was taken to UF Health Hospital, where he later died, troopers said. The two other passengers were airlifted to Orange Park Medical Center. Troopers said a 42-year-old woman from Bowie, Maryland, was seriously injured and a 37-year-old man from Mississauga suffered minor injuries.
It is unknown at this time why the SUV, which had been traveling in the inside lane of northbound I-95, veered onto the east shoulder, according to FHP.
