Garden City, KS : Ensign man killed, Satanta man injured in Gray County accident on Wednesday, March 29th 2017
A 27-year-old Ensign man was killed Wednesday morning after crashing into an oncoming vehicle that was attempting to pass a tractor-trailer in rural Gray County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that Richard L. Hixon was eastbound in his Ford passenger car on U.S. Highway 56 three miles west of Ensign at about 11:44 a.m. when a westbound Dodge Pickup driven by Koll T. Graybill, 23, of Satanta moved into the eastbound lane in an attempt to pass a semi and struck Hixon’s vehicle.
Hixon, who died of his injuries, was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
Graybill, who also was not wearing a seat belt, suffered disabling injuries and was taken to Western Plains. His condition was not available Wednesday night.
Graybill had three passengers with him at the time of the accident: Savannah Balvanz, 22, of Satanta; Eli Balvanz, 19 months, of Satanta; and Rose M. Graybill, 4 months, of Satanta.
The children were both secured in car seats and sustained no injuries. Savannah Balvanz, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
