GEARHART, OR : Driver falls asleep, crashes into power pole and starts fire on Saturday evening July 26th 2014

A driver who fell asleep and crashed into a power pole in Gearhart on Saturday started a fire that spread across several acres, Oregon State Police said.

Troopers said “an enforcement decision is pending” for 69-year-old Royal Nebeker of Gearhart.

They said he was driving southbound on Highway 101 at Cullaby Lake Lane at about 4:40 p.m. when he fell asleep, crossed the highway and hit the pole. The pole broke, which brought down the lines and started the fire.

The highway was partially closed until about 5:15 p.m.

Nebeker wasn’t hurt.
