2 dead; dozens injured 500 plus cars in crash zone

Chaos on I-10 Thanksgiving morning in Southeast Texas. Just after 8:15 Thursday morning, in dense fog, a massive chain reaction accident happened in a matter of minutes, near Hamshire, Texas.
When it was done, there were more than 500 vehicles strewn across Interstate 10 in Jefferson County in piles of twisted metal, some coming to rest on top of each other.
80 to 120 people were injured. First responders were so overwhelmed by the number of injuries, those with less serious injuries were treating fellow motorist on the pavement.
The massive pile up brought both the eastbound and westbound traffic on I-10 to a stand still. More than 500 vehicles were trapped in the crash zone.
It took hours to transport the most seriously injured by ambulance to hospitals in Beaumont, Port Arthur and Whinnie.
Two of the most critically injured, a man and a child were air lifted to Hermann Memorial hospital here in Houston.
As of 2 p.m. Thursday, The Department of Public Safety says 2 people are dead. DPS says the deceased are 60 year old Debra Leggio and 64 year old Vincent Leggio both from Pearland.
It wasn't immediately clear how the pileup began, but Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rod Carroll said the fog was so thick that deputies didn't immediately realize they were dealing with multiple accidents.
"It is catastrophic," Carroll said. "I've got cars on top of cars."
I-10's eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed for most of Thursday. It is expected to take another 10 hours to remove the debris from the wreckage.
